Sensory Sensitivities:
A lot of autistic folks experience the world in a much more intense way. Sounds, lights, smells, textures, and busy places can be a lot.
What might look like a "meltdown," someone shutting down, or "acting out" is often a person whose brain is overloaded and just trying to cope, not someone being bad on purpose.
Simple things help: quieter spots to sit, dimmer lights, letting people wear headphones, giving directions in writing instead of just talking fast, and giving extra time to process.
So if you see someone covering their ears, rocking, or needing a break, offering patience and space instead of judgment is one easy way to be more welcoming. Need more information? Contact Spectrum Connection at 870-404-3468 or visit:
