What is Autism

what is autism
You hear the word "autism" a lot these days, but folks don't always say what it actually means.
Autism is a difference in how a person's brain is wired. It can affect how someone talks, understands others, learns, and handles the world around them.
You'll also hear "autism spectrum." That just means autistic people are all different, some need a lot of daily help, some need a little, and some mostly need understanding and flexibility.
In our Twin Lakes communities, many families include autistic children, teens, and adults, and they belong at the heart of community life-at the bridge, in our schools, at church, and at local events.
For Autism Awareness month, let's focus on listening, learning, and making Baxter County a place where autistic neighbors feel safe, welcomed, and understood. Over the next few posts, Spectrum Connection is going to share some basics, bust a few myths, and talk about how we can be better neighbors, coworkers, and friends to our autistic friends and family. Contact Spectrum Connection at 870-404-3468 or visit Spectrum Connection of Arkansas Also, go to our Facebook page and/or join our private Facebook Group to follow along as we share simple, real-life posts to help you find your footing.
